I am getting ready for the Grand Marais Plein-air Fest which starts on Friday and goes until the following Friday. I am sneaking up to Grand Marais during the day to check things out and am getting super pumped for a week of non-stop painting!
unfortunately my cell phone camera has decided to fail so together with a digital camera and an old cell phone I hope to get some shots to show all of you my progress at the Plein-air fest.

Making Hard Edges Appear Soft

The last 2 weeks I have been telling you how important it is to be able to control the soft edges in your watercolor work. Yes it is hard and it will take practice to control those edges, but it is a very important lesson to learn.

This week I am telling you that you can make your painting all hard edges and still make some of those edges that are hard look soft. No this isn't magic but instead a controling of your values so the hard edges don't have as much contrast next to each other. Take a look at the John Pike painting below. The mountain in the background is painted with a hard edge, but because the value of that mountain is very close the the value of the sky, it gives the illusion of a soft edge.

This is a very simple way of making your hard edges look soft. Make the edges and values next to each other really close and if you want to use close to the same color next to each other, that helps it out even more to look soft.
