After 3 weeks of being away and having a great Plein-air event and a very successful workshop, I finally got home yesterday just in time to get ready for a workshop next week in Green Bay and then the following week in Ann Arbor Michigan. I will get my Paint-a-longs back on track but the October 13th will be from Ann Arbor Michigan so I'm not sure if that one will happen. Always check this newsletter or my website for when the paint-a-longs happen.

Cell Phone Camera

3 weeks ago before I left for Minnesota and Wisconsin my phone camera went down and wouldn't work. I'm now happy that my cell phone camera broke because it made me realize that no matter how good they said my Samsung S20 Ultra camera was, I have discovered that it doesn't take as good a photo as my digital Sony NEX-5R camera when it comes to taking photos of my paintings and anything in low light. I started noticing that my images off the Samsung phone were always too crisp and too light with way too much contrast. When I took photos of my paintings in low light it would just make the paintings light and contrasty, nothing like the real painting. It looks okay but isn't what the paintings really looks like. I was losing all the subtle soft edges and replacing them with hard crisp edges. The subtle mood of my work was being replaced with crisp contrast and made the images look okay but it doesn't show the painting as it really is.

I started using my Sony Digital camera because my cell phone camera broke and I noticed my Sony did a much better job of depicting the soft edges and the colors compared to my cell phone camera. I hear that I could probably adjust my cell phone camera to help take better photos but, in the end, I've been told by photographers that the Sony has a much larger digital sensor than the cell phone camera and can pick up way more subtle details.

My conclusion is that I will start using my digital NEX-5R camera for photos that are important to have look exactly like they are and use the cell phone camera for those shots where it really isn't important to get an exact copy of the image you are seeing.

I also recommend a digital scan of your paintings when you want an image of your work that you may also want to get prints made from.

Product of the Week Again

My Sony Camera is an older Sony-NEX 5R but I think this camera is a newer version of that camera. The sensor is huge on these cameras and was recommended to me by a photographer and has worked so well for me for years. I totally recommend you start using a camera like this if you want your shots to be more like the scenes you are seeing and you want to represent the exact look of your paintings.
