#421 Hello from Dillman's! Last week's workshop in Minnesota was a great start to the 3 workshops I have in June. I think all 25 students gained a lot of new teachings. I also picked up new methods of teaching and I
always try to pass them along to you. One lesson I have recently felt I should pass along to beginners is the use of a limited palette. Read below why using a limited palette can really benefit you as an artist.
NO Class at The Civic Center in Libertyville, Thurs, June 22nd NO Class, at The Studio in McHenry,
Sat, June 24th Benefits of using a Limited Palette Watercolor manufactures these days offer up a wide range of colors. However, the abundance of choices can often be overwhelming, especially for those who are new
to the medium. By working with a limited palette, one can focus on developing fundamental skills and gaining a deeper understanding of color theory, composition, and value.
Here are several reasons why it is advantageous for beginners to use a limited palette in watercolor:
1. Simplicity and Focus: A limited palette simplifies the color selection process, allowing beginners to focus on the essential aspects of painting, such as
composition, value, and brushwork. It eliminates the need to worry about choosing from an extensive range of colors, thus reducing decision worries and making the painting process more enjoyable.
2. Understanding Color Mixing: Limited palettes encourage beginners to explore and understand the principles of color mixing. By using a small number of colors,
artists can experiment with various combinations and observe how different hues interact and produce new shades. This hands-on experience helps in building a strong foundation in color theory and enables artists to create harmonious color schemes.
3. Value and Contrast: Working with a limited palette helps beginners develop a keen eye for values and contrast which if you have watched me demo , I am always
harping on. By restricting the color choices, artists can focus on the tonal relationships within your paintings. Understanding and effectively using a light and dark value pattern is crucial for creating depth, dimension, and a great composition and design.
4. Cohesion and Harmony: A limited palette facilitates color harmony in your painting. When you use a select number of colors throughout your artwork, it creates a
sense of unity and cohesion. By deliberately choosing colors that work well together, you can achieve a more harmonious and balanced composition.
5. Cost-Effective: Watercolor paints can be expensive, especially when starting out. By using a limited palette, beginners can invest in a small set of
high-quality paints. This approach is not only cost-effective but also encourages artists to explore the full potential of the limited colors they have.
6. Confidence Building: Working with a limited palette allows you to master a few colors before venturing into a broader spectrum. This gradual approach helps
build confidence and competence in handling and manipulating watercolors. As you become more comfortable a limited palette, you can gradually expand your color choices and experiment with new combinations.
To sum things up, using a limited palette of colors in watercolor painting provides artists with a structured and focused learning experience. It simplifies the
complexity of color selection, promotes a deeper understanding of color theory and mixing, strengthens the grasp on values and contrast, encourages cohesive compositions, and is cost effective. Embracing a limited palette can lead to a confident growth in your watercolor endeavors. Alvaro Castagnet has been using a very limited palette at this stage of his artistic career. If it is good for someone this advanced it can also be good for you the beginner!
