Measure your paper before you start to paint

The easiest way to save money on framing is to paint to standard frame sizes.
Here is a list of sizes that you should paint in. These sizes will fit the mat that will then go directly into a standard size frame. 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, 20x24, 20x28 are standard frame sizes.

The watercolor paper comes in sheets 22x30 and most students cut the sheet into half and quarters, so that makes your half sheet 15x22. this size with a 3" mat all around it will not fit into a standard frame, what you need to do is tape off your paper to be a little bigger than 14x22 and then it will fit into a 20x28 frame with a 3 inch mat all the way around.
The quarter sheet which is 11x15 will fit nicely into a 16x20 frame if you cut a mat slightly bigger then 2 1/2" all around.

Spend a little time in measuring out your paper before you paint and it will save you loads of money later when you go to frame.

I would like to remind you that I will soon be selling standard frame sizes.... as I update my website I will have a page where you will be able to order those frames from and then pick them up at The Studio.
Paint-A-Long from last week's Dillman's Workshop
Below you find a step by step painting we did last week at Dillman's. Much of what I said a lot of is, simplify the large value patterns in the painting, working your way from light to dark.

Step 1: simple washes of light and medium values.

Step 2:  start establishing a dark so you can compare the light to the darkest darks
Step 3: Next I added the pillars, working slower so I could give it a clean lok.
Step 4: Next I put in details. people, and objects
Step 5: I finished it off by adding cobble stones on the streets along with other small details.
