BeckerArt FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter September 22nd

Published: Tue, 09/22/15

Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #21

Last week was filled with so many new opportunities for me, first was Linda Kemp contacting me to ask if I could help her out in doing a workshop for the Central New York Watercolor Society that she wasn't going to be able to do, she has come down with some health issues. I do hope she gets well soon, she is an amazing instructor and I wish her all the best and speedy recovery.
Then I got a call from Expo 2016: Creative Ascension which is an expo/workshop event in Santa Fe. I will be teaching there next Sept/October.
And all last week I received new private paint party gigs, all-in-all a pretty productive week.

If you are interested in my Greek Island Workshop next year, could you please contact Dillman's to let them know you are interested, they are asking me to let them know if I have any interested parties.

In this week's newsletter, I go back to my days at the American Academy of Art and talk about one's progress in learning the art of watercolor.

I still have some seats available for this weeks paint parties at The Studio in McHenry.
Reserve your seats today!

There will be classes both Thursday and Saturday this week.... see you there!

Throwback Everyday!
David

Look back to see how far you have come
When I see students struggle it reminds me of my days at the American Academy of Art, when I took 3 years of watercolor with my mentor Irving Shapiro. Struggling and not getting what you want was and still is part of the learning process. When I see a student make a mistake or not get exactly what they want and then see them get frustrated, I try to assure them that it wasn't a mistake it was a lesson learned and that the next time they run into that situation they will be one step closer to not making that mistake again.

The easiest way of growing is to do it over and over again. If you do it on your own it will take you longer then if you take classes and have a professional teacher show you the way. However, in the end it is up to the individual to practice, practice, practice!

Below I have paintings from my 2nd year of watercolor class. At that time, these were my best works and I saved them thinking they were so amazing. Looking back now, I realise they are not very professional and not done like I would do them today. As a student, your work done in class are exercises and should be thought of that way. Don't worry if they turn out or not, learn from them, that is what is important, not that you made a pretty picture. When you paint alone in your studio that is hopefully when all that practice and knowledge will show in the paintings that you do.

Save your old exercises and every now and then look back at your progress, and remember with art you never stop learning.
I sure did use a lot of green and brown back in art school and it looks like I wasn't floating my pigment. Painted a lot of forests and buildings.
Please contact Dillman's if you are interested in this workshop. Thanks!
I'm getting great reviews on this brush, Thanks!

Link of the Week.
American Academy of Art is where I went to art school for 4 years even though it was a 2 year school. I actually never wanted to leave and teach right out of school, but Shapiro gave me the advice to go out and experience the real world and while I do that he let me substitute for his class when he was away doing workshops. He was an amazing guy!
