BeckerArt FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter August 11th

Published: Tue, 08/11/15

Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #15

This week I'm getting back into work mode, last week I was in vacation mode, even though I was back in my studio. Keep on sketching, summer is still here and you don't want to miss a day of nice weather.

Are you getting the beautiful skies that I am seeing so often this summer. Skies this summer have been amazing.
All day long you can get some amazing cloud shots and in the evening some amazing sunsets.
Since I been taking so many beautiful sky photos all summer long, this week the newsletter is about painting skies and if you have ever taken my class or workshop you know my second favorite phrase "Everything is a Sky".
Will explain below

Dillman's has just posted the full website to my workshop to the Greek Islands, check out the link below.

For Thursday and Saturday class students.... classes are a go this week!

Happy Sky Sketching!

What do I mean "Everything is a Sky"
This quote I use often on every student because it helps every student become confident in painting fresh watercolor washes, on no matter what the student is painting.
I have always found that students feel real comfortable with painting skies, they float their pigment, they can usually do the sky in one to two washes, making it look very fresh. For this reason alone I tell students that no matter what they are painting, pretend that it is a sky. This means not being afraid, loosening up, working fresh using only as few a washes as possible. The only thing that would be important when painting everything like a sky is the hard outlined edge that defines a shape, but in that shape, no matter what that shape is, float your pigment and pretend the inside of that shape is a sky type wash.
A good exercise is to tape off a sheet of watercolor paper into small sections and practice painting soft edged sky washes.

Quote of the Week

"Everything is a Sky"
