Make the Internet & Social Media your BFF
I can still remember the first one-man show I ever had, and I can tell you that after ordering postcards, and flyers, stuffing and stamping envelopes and sending out press releases, the costs were much more than I ever made.

As an artist these days, one has so many inexpensive options when it comes to advertising a show or presenting one's work to potential clients. These days it's all about the internet and social media sites, like a  Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, and Twitter. They are not only on one's computer but also on most people's phones and tablets and some even get it on their television sets.

The best thing about this kind of advertising for the up and coming artist is that it's all free once you have an internet connection and a computer or tablet to work with. There is free emailing with places like gmail, along with free places like Wordpress to start blogs and even build websites. You say you don't have enough money for starting your artistic career, well there are even places like Kickstarter to help you get funded if money is an issue.

There was a time when a portfolio was the most important tool for showing off an artist's work, these days it has switched over to an artist's website. Many of the young artist's who don't have the money to have a website built or can't afford a personal domain name, use places like Behance or Deviantart.

The point I am trying to make is to those artist's that still hesitate to use these tools because they are scared of the unknown, you are obviously getting this newsletter so you are comfortable with using the internet and this technology, now go out and promote yourself to the world, it's all out there for the taking.

The Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Art

Since 1983 I have been a member at The Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts. This academy, located in the near north area of Chicago is an amazing place to belong to if you love fine art.

When the American Academy canceled their evening classes, where I first started teaching, a lady whose name I forget and I decided we would ask the board at the P&C, if we could start classes that would for the first time bring in money to the club. The board voted yes and from that point on our 2 classes began what had grown into what now is the P&C school.
A huge amount of help came from Board member Tor Muehl that took our 2 classes and went looking for more classes and arranged and managed the school.

I had taught there since that time we started the school but had to give up my class 2 years ago because of being laid off my job in the city.
I am hoping to get back to the P&C next year to start up my classes again.
