BeckerArt FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter January 26th Moving Water

Published: Tue, 01/26/16

Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #39 Moving Water

Can't wait until this coming Sunday when I will be demonstrating at the Marco Island Arts Center in Florida. It's always fun meeting new artists from other states. I hope to talk to a few places about doing a workshop down there next year.

Monday morning my computers hard drive crashed, luckily I had most of this newsletter finished.
I am now looking into saving my files on the cloud, along with saving files on another external hard drive. I will put my findings, about backing up one's files in a future newsletter. Sooner or later every hard drive will fail so if you don't want to loose all your files, one needs to back up those hard drives. Something I should have done long ago..... live and learn.

YES to Class this Thursday at the Civic Center in Libertyville
NO CLASS Saturday at The Studio in McHenry.

Happy Painting!

Moving Water

My favorite three things I love to paint are cities, boats and water, and this is the reason my favorite place for painting is Venice, Italy.

When it comes to painting moving water I had a great teacher and Mentor that did some of the best-looking waterfalls, his name of course, was Irving Shapiro. He did a great job teaching us how to paint so many different things, but the place I learn the most about painting the ripples and spray of water was from watching Disney animated movies. If you watch Bambi or The Fox and the Hound, or any of those older Disney classics you will see how they simplify the water movement by just making the ripples and spray by using  white or a very light color.below you can see a few examples of how simple light lines and areas are used to show the movement and look of water splashing or rippling.

In my paintings, I use the white of the paper to show splashing water or the movement of the water surface.     You can see by the samples below that if you want to show spray or movement, leave the paper white.
