BeckerArt FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter March 15th Competitions

Published: Tue, 03/15/16

Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #46 Competitions

It is so nice here in the midwest now that the snow has melted and it's time to get outside without that heavy winter coat. It will be great for getting outside and doing some plein-air painting. This is something I would like to do more of this year, I hope you get a chance to do it too!

This week I will be entering Plein-Air Salon, so I thought it would be fitting to talk about entering juried shows in this newsletter.

If you didn't get a chance to see my demonstration last week at the Northland Area Art League, I took a video and also a picture of the painting. The picture is HERE, but the video isn't ready yet, I hope to get it edited shortly.

YES to Class this Thursday at the Civic Center in Libertyville
YES  to Class this Saturday at The Studio in McHenry.

Good Luck!
David

Pictured above is a painting I submitted to one of the Splash Book competitions. It was accepted and that helped start my artistic career.  This is the Splash book I was accepted into. SPLASH 3

Entering Competitions
"When should I start entering watercolor competitions", is a question I get once in a while from some of my students, and "which competitions should I enter and what should I submit".

I think any student artist that is getting a body of work together can start submitting work when they feel they have something they are proud of and want to show it off. Entering these shows is a great way to reach for artistic goals. At times, it can be very disappointing when you don't get excepted but it can also drive you to try even harder and work more to get better and grow as an artist.

There are so many competitions at so many different levels one can choose from, at times it can get very confusing along with being a lot of work and very expensive. Start out with a few juried shows that are local and try a few that are online and then little by little start going for the big national shows.

I have listed a few websites below that list some of the juried shows.
If you know the name of certain shows that you would like to enter, usually typing in the name on Google will get you their website and the info you need to enter into their show.

Don't enter these shows thinking only about the prize money, think about how it can help you achieve levels in your artistic career and if by chance you win an award, it will give you a feeling of achievement and will boost your resume.

"Which work should I enter"? That's easy, enter your best.

Make sure you read the rules of the juried show, there is nothing worse then getting rejected because you did something wrong that was listed in their rules.

Watercolor Artist of the Week
Each week I will be bringing you an artist that I admire and that amazes me. I hope these artist's will amaze and inspire you to keep on painting and develop your own style as much as they inspire me.

Speaking of juried exhibitions and winning prizes, Dean Mitchell must win more prizes then any other artist out there. Every time I see a catalog of a show, Dean is in it and usually wins a prize, and I believe well deserved. Dean is an amazing artist!

Book of the Week
This is the book that launched my fine art teaching career.
After I was excepted to show my work in this book I was given the opportunity to write my first book "Watercolor Composition Made Easy", which in turn help my teaching career.
