BeckerArt FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter June 7th,

Published: Tue, 06/07/16

Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #58,

Hello from Cape Cod, MA...... I wrote this newsletter last week knowing I wouldn't get much time to write it while attending my son's graduation from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
When it comes to quality art schools, I highly recommend RISD, it is a school that teaches very closely to how I was taught when I attended the American Academy of Art.

This week I talk about value sketches, the next step after a thumbnail sketch which I talked about in last week's newsletter.

Sue Macfarlan will be teaching classes this Thursday at the Civic Center in Libertyville.
YES to CLASS this coming Saturday June 11th at The Studio in McHenry.

Listed below are days we will NOT be having classes this summer.
I will not be teaching at the Civic Center in Libertyville 9th, 16th and 30th July 21st, and 28th
Susan Macfarlan will be substituting for my classes on June 9th,  July 21st and 28th

No classes in McHenry at The Studio July 23rd and 30th
Please mark your calendars

The Value Sketch
Last week's newsletter talked about thumbnail sketches, this week I take the sketch to the next level with value sketches.

Value sketches are the blueprints to your paintings composition and value pattern. Doing a pencil value sketch is like doing your painting in one color before you do it with watercolor.

If your reference photo doesn't have a great composition or a bad value pattern, a value sketch is where you work out a good composition and good value pattern. See below to see what I did with some photos that are not composed well.

When working from a color photo I suggest that my students turn them into a black and white photo so you see the large values of light and dark. If there are no changes in the composition of a photo I sometimes let them use the Black and white photo as their value sketch. If however the photo needs changes then a value sketch is necessary.

Remember the apps I had suggested in a former newsletter, these apps can help you when turning your photos to black and white.  Click Here for apps newsletter

Artist of the Week
Each week I will be bringing you an artist that I admire and that amazes me. I hope these artists will amaze and inspire you to keep on painting and develop your own style as much as they inspire me.

Winslow Homer- being on the east coast always makes me think of Homer.
To get here to Cape Cod I drive through most of New York State and head towards Boston, through Massachusetts, one can't help thinking about how much of this part of the country Winslow Homer painted and how wonderful those paintings are.

App of the Week
2 weeks ago the newsletter was about mobile apps that artists can use on our phones or tablets.

I had artists send me their favorite app and I am now sharing them with you.

Beth Lepper shared Cam Scanner.
This is an amazing app where you can scan paintings, photos and documents and then edit them in wonderful ways

A Painting can be scanned(photographed) and then can easily be squared up to fit the exact  window frame size, with no messy edges and no out of perspective photos. The text in a document can also be turned into text that can be edited. Check out this powerful App HERE
