BeckerArt FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter June 28th, Workshopping

Published: Wed, 06/29/16

Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #60, Workshopping

Hello from Lac Du Flambeau, Wisconsin, home of the fabulous artist workshop resort Dillman's!
Sorry for the day delay in getting this newsletter to you, Dillman's WiFi was out because of a storm that hit last weekend. The WIFI came back up last night, so i finally got the chance to write it this morning.
If you have never taken a 4 or 5-day workshop away from home, I highly recommend it.
I teach 2 to 7-day workshops but I have also taken workshops from some amazing instructors.
The knowledge one gains from a week in a workshop surrounded by an instructor and other students who are eager to learn makes for a very educational and fun-filled workshop.

These week's newsletter I take you through what to expect from my workshops and how to make the most out of any workshop you may attend.

Next month, the last week in July, I will be teaching at The Vermont Art Event
for information on the classes go to VERMONT ART EVENT

Here's to Great Workshop settings!

Getting Workshop Ready
First off I would like to thank everyone that has ever taken one of my classes or workshops. It's because of amazing, talented, fun people like you that I keep on trying to do as many workshops as I can.

My main goal when teaching a workhop is to share all my knowledge and know-how to every single student in that class. I strive to turn every student into a professional painter.

I tell my students when taking my workshops to keep an open mind and for the days you are in the class try to step out of your routine, comfort zone and style and try to follow close to what I am teaching, even if it takes you out of your comfort zone. I always assume students are in my class to learn and pickup my approch and knowledge of how I work and approch watercolors. Hopefully by trying and learning different lessons in a workshop you will go back home and apply some of those lessons to your work.

Don't worry about doing your best work in a workshop, worry more about learning new things. Due to the time limits and the constraints in a classroom most artist can't do their best work and I tell students not to make it a contest, it's a learning experience. Many will compare their works  to others in the class and get discouraged if they don't come up with works that look as good.  I suggest to take in what others in the class are doing and use that to inspire you in your next painting.

I always recommend taking workshops from many different instructors and picking up new ways of painting from them all, then use what you like in your own work to build your own style. Lessons that you may not like or agree with can be chalked up as a good lesson and experience but doesn't mean you need to use it in your work following the workhop, but again chalk it up as a good experience.
