BeckerArt FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter August 23rd, Recycle

Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #69, Recycle

This past week I have been cleaning up my studio to give me more space to do larger paintings. As I was organizing and cleaning I realized I have a lot of paintings that are not good or not finished. I don't have the heart to throw any watercolors done on Arches 300lb away because the paper is so expensive. I have been going through the piles of paintings and made a pile of paintings that will be recycled. How do I recycle those paintings you ask....read below and watch the video to learn how I recycle watercolor paper.

Coming up in September I will be demonstrating in Park Ridge and in Lemont and I also will be teaching a workshop in Santa Fe.... more info to come on the demos and workshop in Santa Fe in the next newsletter.

Recycle Used Watercolor Paper

If you are like most watercolorist you spend a lot of money on watercolor paper. I myself  work on Arches 300lb cold press and on Strathmore 4 ply Bristol Board and both are quite expensive. This is the reason I never throw a sheet of this paper away, even if it is unfinished or was a failed painting.

Good watercolor paper can be softly scrubbed to take away the surface pigment and repainted or primed with a product like Goldens Absorbent Ground to become a new sheet of workable watercolor paper.

If you don't like the resurfaced watercolor paper for use with watercolor you can also use it for other mediums. Acrylics are great to use on a reprimed paper surface.

Check out how I resurface a used sheet of Arches 300lb watercolor paper in the video below

Artist of the Week
Burton Silverman mostly paints in oils now but back when I was an art student he did some amazing watercolors.
It was his works that inspired me to work on hot press. In his book, he would show you how he  scrubbed out parts of his washes and lay washes over the scrubbed out parts. Examples were in his book called, Breaking the Rules of watercolor.

Book of the Week
Ted Rose also has a book of many of his train paintings that always got awards when he entered them into competitions.
