BeckerArt FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter July 12th, Workshops

Published: Tue, 07/12/16

Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #63, Workshops

Last week I received some good news that I know some of you are going to enjoy hearing. I get  emails now and then asking me if I will be teaching a workshop in different parts of the country or at a certain workshop venue,  most of the time I have to say no. But the news I got last week was that I am starting my own BeckerArt traveling workshops. I will be working with a travel agent to set up some of my future workshops.

Since my layoff almost 3 years ago I have been desperately trying to get back into the workshop circuit. Back In 2001, I had finally gotten into the workshop circuit  with the help of a friend, Austrailia watercolorist Robert Wade. Robert couldn't come to the US anymore because of health insurance problems so Robert set me up with all the big name workshop places he had taught at and had told them they should hire me to take over his spot at their workshop venue. All would have gone great but then 9/11 happened and all my workshops that year were canceled.  I was about to teach at the Hudson River Valley School, Scottsdale Artist School, Dillman's, Coastal Maine Art Workshops  and a few watercolor societies but instead headed back into illustrating and only doing a couple of workshops a year.

In 2014, I was doing only 1 or 2 workshops a year because of my illustration job, but that year I was also laid  off so I immediately tried getting back into those big name workshop venues. Unfortunately, most places don't take on many new artists since their rosters are already full. About 6 months ago I was about to give up on getting back into the circuit and head back into storyboard illustration but then I got a call from a lady over at Cheap Joe's. She told me that Joe Miller wants me to teach at his place.... Bingo, that was the news I needed after all the rejections I had gotten since I was laid off work.

I now will be doing 1 to 3 big name workshop venues and the rest will be run by yours truly, along with my wonderful travel agent Patty, from Crystal Lake Travel. I plan on asking all my students where they would like to take a workshop and then I will ask Patty to make it happen. Here's a BeckerArt Travel Workshop for 2017

If your group or art venue ever needs a watercolor instructor, please contact me at david@davidrbecker.com

Today's newsletter goes into what to expect if you were to take one of my overseas cruise workshops

In 2 weeks I teach  in Vermont, at Holbein's Vermont Art Event. These classes are a little different, in that you don't have to bring art supplies with. Holbein and I supply you with everything you need for these classes. You pay for a 3-hour class and you can mix and match teachers, mediums, and times. I usually take a class myself from one of the other great instructors.for information on the classes go to VERMONT ART EVENT

If you can't make Vermont for these types of classes, I will be in Santa Fe, NM for the Artisan Materials Expo Sept.29th - Oct. 1st at these classes you also don't have to bring supply's.

This week I finally saw my sign-up page on Cheap Joes site for my class on Oct. 9th thru the 13th of 2017
You can already sign up for that workshop at Cheap Joes.  I hear so many good things about that workshop space, I can't wait to teach there.

Hope you're having a great summer!
David

Workshops
When it comes to teaching I have been doing it since 1983, right out of the American Academy of Art. I have always loved teaching and my dream of teaching full time is finally becoming a reality. Thanks to all of you that have taken one of my classes or workshops, it's because of you that I get to follow my dream and hopefully teach you as much as I know about this wonderful medium of watercolor.

Listed below are the many different types of classes and workshops I have and will be teaching.
  • The weekly, 3-hour, local, in a classroom, classes.
This type of class is great for keeping you learning and painting week by week.
It is also a great place to meet artists that have the same interest in the class as you.

  • The 1 to 5-all day workshop, in a classroom, that are local or at a distant location
Full day workshops usually last anywhere from 1 to 5 days. It is a very intense way to learning a lot and advancing your skills a lot faster then doing a week to week class.
It also is a great place to meet other artists
    I teach

  • The plein-air workshop, conducted outside, either local or at a distant location
Great for learning to paint from the actual subject instead of a photograph.
There is a lot to be said about learning to paint and draw from the actual subject matter instead of from a photo, it's just plain simply a great learning tool to paint plein-air.

  • The traveling workshop where you are traveling to an exotic location or a place you have always wanted to travel to. they can be anywhere from 5 to 11 days
This type of workshop is a bit different in that you are doing many things like exploring new places, taking tours, Sketching plein-air, photographing, learning to paint, meeting new people and relaxing.
This type of workshop is a great way to learn and experience so much, along with really getting to know other artists and the instructor.

  • The Material Expo type of workshop, either local or at a distant location
This kind of workshop usually last 3 to 5 days, with many different instructors, teaching 3 hour classes .Usually, all the supplies for these classes are provided so you can try many different teachers, styles, and mediums. This type of workshop is great for trying new things.

Listed below are some of the workshops I have coming up and some for next year. Sign-up today!
