BeckerArt FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter Sept. 27th, Perspective

Published: Tue, 09/27/16

Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #74, Perspective

The painting above was a demonstration I gave to the Lemont  Artist Guild last week. Thanks to all those that came out to watch. I love meeting so many new artists at all these guilds. It is so nice to see so many people interested in art and painting. I feel so fortunate to get the chance to help out and teach so many talented people who just want to create beautiful works of art.  If you belong to an arts club and you would like them to invite me to demonstrate, please email me and I will get back to you to see if we can make a demonstration happen.

This week I fly out to Santa Fe to teach at the Artisan Materials Expo. This is an event where all the major art material manufacturers are showing off their stuff. Students don't need to bring any supplies because all the supplies are provided for them by the manufacturers. If you take my classes you will be using Holbein and Strathmore products.

Last week on facebook I saw a video that showed the coolest way to do 2 point perspective, so this week's newsletter will be about 1 and 2 point perspective.

2 Point Perspective

Last week while checking up on Facebook I came across a video that amazed me. It was an artist/ architect drawing a picture that had 2 point perspective in it and the artist was drawing lines in perspective with the help of a piece of string. I then went looking to see if I could find someone using string for one point perspective too, but I didn't find a video for that.

I will not be teaching you 1 and 2 point Perspective in this newsletter, instead, I want you to watch the 2 videos below and check out the images I pulled off of Google Maps. These videos will teach you about perspective and the images will show you a visual of one and two point perspective.

The videos do such a good job showing perspective that I don't have to write a bunch of stuff for you to learn it, watch the videos and you should get a good idea how to use perspective in a painting

Above you have an image showing 1 point perspective, this is where all the horizontal lines lead back to a single vanishing point.
This image above demonstrates 2 point perspective, where there are 2 vanishing points on the horizon line.
The vanishing point that is created by the buildings on the right would run off the page of the images view. This happens a lot with 2 point perspective where the vanishing point is not in the images field of view. The vanishing point is always on the horizon line but would be far to the right.
Below is the video I talked about where the artist uses a string to make his lines.... This is so ingenious.

Artist of the Week
Robert J Krajecki- Mr. Krajecki to me was my fundamentals teacher at the American Academy of Art who taught me everything I needed to know about perspective. He also has a book out on Perspective.

I will never forget the perspective project http://davidsavellano.comwhere we painted an entire room that you first had to lay out in perspective including the shadows.

You too can learn from Mr. Krajecki at the Palette and Chisel in Chicago.

App of the Week

Here is an amazing app that an artist friend shared with me and I thought the app did some amazing changing from picture to a beautiful work of art. See below to see what I did with a simple shot of a dog.
The app cost 2.99 but I think it was well worth the money to see how an image can be changed into all kind of interesting painterly styles.
