Published: Tue, 09/20/16

Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #73, Travel Supplies

After talking about art leagues in last week's newsletter, I got the chance to demonstrate for the Park Ridge Art League last Friday and it was such a great experience. You always meet so many wonderful new people when attending these clubs meetings/demonstrations. I liked it so much that I am doing another this Wednesday in Lemont IL. for the Lemont Artist Guild.

I received such a great response to last weeks newsletters about these art organizations that I want to promote it again to you this week.....Join an art club you will be so glad you did.

This week's newsletter will be talking about what I bring with on a watercolor sketching workshop like the one I will be conducting in 3 weeks in the Greek Islands.

A very talented student of mine, Jerry Lindgren is having an exhibit that the public is invited to. It will be at the Patty Turner Center, 375 Elm St. in Deerfield IL, on Sunday, October 16th from 2:30 to 5:30pm

Next Wednesday I head to Santa Fe, NM for the Santa-Fe Artisan Materials Expo 2016
If you are in the area on the 29th, 30th or the 1st, do stop on in the expo

Travel Sketching Supplies

A few weeks ago I was asked if I do plein-air workshops.... the answer is, it depends on the location, how much time we are at the location and what is the weather like in the location.

The workshop I am doing in the Greek Islands next month is one where I will be teaching plein-air sketching more than plein-air painting. The difference is that in sketching you quickly document a scene by painting a rough sketch that later you can use as a reference to later paint a more finished piece.

On my upcoming workshop, there will be 18 pre-scheduled tours and lectures that will take place at 8 different ports and islands. Being this busy with so many tours makes it difficult and cumbersome to plein-air paint, where you sit in one location for a longer period of time and your supplies consist of  larger supplies like a portable easel, portable chair, umbrella, large palette and larger paper.
With my Greek Island workshop, I will teach the class to sketch in watercolor along with taking loads of photos that we can later take onboard or on shore and paint finish works from.

I do like doing plein-air painting type workshops but the location and situation for a workshop like that has to be more accommodating to that type of workshop.

The supplies provided to all the students on this workshop in Greece are pictured above. The canvas/leather art messenger bag will be holding:
  • 4 different size blocks of watercolor paper
  • AquaTote for a water container
  • Smaller compact traveling palette
  • Larger traveling palette
  • 23 Holbein watercolors
  • Sketching pencils
  • Kneaded rubber erasers
  • Pencil Sharpener
  • Sketching Marker
  • White Artist Tape
  • Magic Eraser Sponge
  • Sketching pad
  • 3 BeckerArt Watercolor Brushes
  • Holbein Spray Bottle
  • Larger and small water bottles
These supplies along with a camera, an iPad type tablet or laptop will make taking photos, sketching, and painting a breeze.
