Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #81, Plein-Air Inside

I wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I know the holidays make for a busy time of  the year and many of my student artists don't get the chance to paint or be very creative during the holidays. For those of you that are busy but still would like to get some creativity flowing, I give you this week's newsletter where I talk about a few things you can do to be creative during those times when you are visiting family and friends and celebrating the holidays.

If anybody goes to Florida for the winter and belongs to an art club, I am looking to see if there is a club that needs an instructor to do a workshop for a day or more. If you know of a club or a person in Florida I can contact please email me at BeckerArt@gmail.com. I will be in and around Fort Myers and Marco Island on January 22nd for the Dillman's Festival of Artists, so I am also looking to teach while I am down there.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Plein-Air Inside

The holidays snuck up on me so quickly this year and like many of the years in the past, I always think about how much I am not painting or being creative during the busy holiday season.

This year I what us all to be more creative all November and December long. How can you do this with everything that goes on during this season, the answers are listed below.

If your house is anything like mine, the holidays make the rooms in my house look good along with many of the homes I visit during the holidays. That is exactly why you should "Plein-Air Inside".

What is this "Plein-Air Inside" you ask.... it is basically the same as plein-air painting outside but in the comfort of your or someone else's home.  You don't necessarily have to paint you could just sketch or even photograph still-lifes or interiors like you would when you are doing those things outside. Then you could take those sketches or photos to your studio for painting more finished works of art.

Here is a list to keep you creating during the holidays.....
  • Take your phone/camera and search for still-lifes around your home along with the homes of your family and friends when you visit them. Homes are beautifully decorated during the holidays so take advantage of the decorating
  • Take along a small sketch pad and pencil that you can fit in your pocket when celebrating the holidays. Make a small amount of time available to sit a doodle. If you sketch a still-life or an uncle sleeping in a chair, you will probably get some on lookers, people love watching artists do their thing.
  • Take photos of objects... for instants the glass of champagne sitting on the dinner table, the ornament hanging on the tree or the packages under the tree . Take time to admire and record these objects and scenes and take the shots like you would when taking photos outside that you compose and shoot for painting later.
  • Do a small sketch of something in the home of your host. then give them the sketch as a thank you. You will definitely be the hit of their party and you will always be invited back.
  • Secretly photograph interior room scenes with friends and family, but don't let them know you are taking the photo. You want scenes where the people are not looking at the camera. Remember the famous Norman Rockwell scene of the dad placing the turkey on the table, nobody is looking at the camera.
Have a great Plein-Air Inside Holiday Season!
