Published: Tue, 02/07/17

Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #92, Watercolor Pencil

I hoping that if you started a sketchbook for my 22/66 day sketchbook challenge that you are still going strong.... if you haven't been sketching every day there is no harm, no foul. I would suggest and remind you to just try and sketch as much as possible. There is so much good that comes from sketching.

This week I had a chance to try new watercolor pencils in my sketchbook and I truly enjoyed them so I wanted to write about them in this weeks newsletter.

The Lakes Region Watercolor Guild has their monthly meeting this week on Thursday the 9th.

Watercolor Pencils

I have recently come to try as many new techniques and materials as I possibly can.
Since I have been sketching most every day I try different materials as much as I can. This is another good reason to do my sketchbook challenge so you can try new materials.
I tried some watercolor pencils this week and I really liked how they give me a few options for my sketches.

You can draw with the watercolor pencil like you would with a regular pencil but then there is the added benefit of using water with a brush and giving your sketch a watercolor feel.

Below is a very small sketch I had done in my sketchbook that took about 5 minutes. I first drew up a dog from memory then I used a small brush with a little water and soften up the pencil lines to give the sketch soft shadowing.

The sketch below was just a sketch but if you spent some time on a bigger drawing you could make up a really nice drawing/painting.

I used a Derwent 12 pencil watercolor set and is great for sketching but if you were to use them for a bigger painting I probably would recommend a bigger set. You can also buy the pencils by color, by the piece so you can buy the colors that you personally like. See them HERE at Blicks

Try new materials whenever you get the chance!

Book of the Week
This is a very tiny watercolor sketching book that one of my students showed me last week and I thought it was very informative and inspiring.

Brushes I use in all my workshops

1 1/4" Flat Series 020, #16 Round and a #4 Rigger Holbein Gold, Short Handle, Superior Synthetic Blend Watercolor Brushes. Made to my specifications, which were, The point of the 1 1/4" flat brush and the # 16 round had to come to a razor sharp point, along with a bounce back to straight action when applying watercolor to paper. The # 4 Rigger had to be the perfect length, the perfect thickness, and the perfect point.
