Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #89, Sketching Materials

I would like to send out a huge thank you to all that responded and started the BeckerArt's 22/66 Day Sketchbook Challenge. This was a challenge I gave my students and myself for the new year, it was something I felt all of us were lacking on doing.  It has grown to many artists that I have never met, which is wonderful to see. Everyone that is doing the challenge, good luck and happy sketching!

This week I am getting set for my trip to Marco Island for the Dillman's Festival of Artists. I will be at the Marco Island Center for the Arts on January 22nd

On March 4th and 5th I am putting together an event  with my students and friends called SHOW-iN, a Pop-Up-Gallery and Expo in McHenry at the New Smith's Central Garage. Information HERE

Sketching Materials

Have you started sketching or are you still looking for sketching materials? If you have started, it is also good to try all kinds of different sketching materials and for either case, I have put together a materials list of sketching materials with links where can purchase those items. I don't get a kickback and I am not endorsing these products I am just showing readers how many different items they can choose from and may want to try out.
  • Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pens
Pigmented India Ink in multiple nib sizes... brings great versatility to pen-and-ink drawings requiring lots of intricate details. The ink is waterproof, unsurpassably lightfast, acid-free, and pH-neutral.
  • Copic Sketch Markers
Copic marker offers outstanding performance in all areas of design and illustration. Two versatile tips produce a range of strokes from fine lines to wide color fills. The roll-proof flat barrel is filled with alcohol based ink for a long life.
  • General's Compressed Graphite Sticks- Like I used in the sketch above.
Graphite Sticks are extra-wide, making them ideal for sketching, rubbings, and creating backgrounds.
Choose from three degrees, including 2B, 4B, and 6B. Each stick measures 3" long × ¼" high × ½" wide.
  • Prismacolor Ebony Pencil- one of my favorites for Sketching
The Ebony Pencil has long been the artist's favorite for sketching, drawing, and layout, with its thick, black, satiny-smooth graphite lead.
  • Cretacolor Aqua Monolith Woodless Watercolor Pencil Sets
Cretacolor's Aqua Monolith Watercolor Pencils are woodless pencils from Austria. They're colored pencils made of pigments and binders wrapped in a thin layer of lacquer.
  • Derwent Watercolor Pencils
professional-quality, water-soluble pencils offer the artist the freedom to switch from drawing to painting in an instant, with no change in tools. Use them to shade on dry paper, then quickly wash over with brush and water to get a blending effect.
  • Winsor & Newton Watercolor Markers
Winsor & Newton Watercolor Markers beautify your pages with highly pigmented, lightfast color in a spectrum of 36 brilliant shades.
These markers have a double-ended design that includes both a fine point tip and a flexible brush tip, enabling techniques from subtle to precise.
  • Molotow Grafx Art Masking Liquid Pump Markers  NEW Product I found, will give it a try
A must-have for artists, these ready-to-use, refillable markers contain a water-repellant masking fluid that applies cleanly and rubs off easily, leaving no residue. Molotow's patented pump delivery system assures precise, mess-free application and sharp edges.
Use Molotow Grafx Art Masking Liquid Pump Markers with your favorite Molotow markers, airbrushes, acrylic paints — even ultra-opaque, alcohol-based permanent inks. No brush required!
    Latex-free.
  • Pentel Aquash Water Brush
Ideal for sketching and drawing, the Pentel Arts Aquash Water Brush has a durable nylon tip that holds its point for better stroke control.
Available in a variety of tip sizes, this versatile brush loads easily with water, inks, or fluid colors. What's more, the soft, easy-to-squeeze barrel has a shape that prevents it from rolling off surfaces.
When filled with water, the Aquash Water Brush is great for use with pocket watercolor sets when painting plein air.
  • NEW! Molotow Aqua Squeeze Brush Pens
Coloring and painting are a piece of cake with Molotow Aqua Brush Squeeze Pens.
These sophisticated application tools are easy to fill with water, fluid watercolors, or inks. Mix your own colors, thin them with water, refill, repeat! The water/paint flow is regulated by squeezing the pen's body.
  • Koh-I-Noor Progresso Woodless Graphite Pencils
The Progresso's solid, weighty feel and excellent laydown make it a great pencil for drawing and sketching.
  • General's Flat Point Pencil & Sharpener
Use the Flat Point Sharpener to create a perfect broad chisel point on flat sketching pencils, carpenter pencils, and other artist pencils.
  • Holbein Academic Oil Pastel Sets
These superior student grade oil pastels feature smooth, even pigmentation and no hard spots or bubbles. They handle, blend, and clean easily.
Like all oil pastels, Holbein Academic pastels do not readily break and can be used on virtually any surface. They're ideal for quick sketching.
I'm sure there are hundreds of other kinds of sketching tools and materials I have missed. I would love to hear what you use that I may not have mentioned..... please post those tools on my Facebook BeckerArt's 22/66 Day Sketchbook Challenge to share with those of us interested in sketching with different materials.
Sketch above is my Bob's Blobs or as my students call it David's Dabs exercise that I learned from the great watercolorist Robert Wade, who was another mentor of mine.
