Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #99,  Yours

Last Sunday I was in Hopkins, Minnesota for the Dillman's Festival of Artists and I want to thank all of you that came out to view my demonstration. I posted the video of the demonstration I did down below.

I have so many good lessons to bring to this newsletter after talking to so many of you who came to all the festivals I have been demonstrating at. This week I want to talk a little about what makes a painting yours.... I will explain below.

I want to remind anyone that wants to take my workshop in Vermont at the Landgrove Inn May1st through the 4th to sign-up ASAP to reserve a spot. LINK TO THE LANDGROVE INN

What Makes A Paintings Yours
Is there a famous artist whose paintings you love, and as soon as you see their work you know it is their work. So what is it about that artist's work that makes it recognizable to that artist.
Is it the style, subject matter, size, medium or maybe just the color schemes that artist uses. Whatever it is this is something that you as an artist will achieve if you work and create many works of art.

This is something I've been telling many of my advanced students that they should start thinking about as they go forward in their artistic endeavors. Many of my students have become very good at controlling their medium and are becoming very good artists and now I want to teach them that they need to make their paintings their own by doing more paintings and constantly trying new things.

When someone sees your work, what is it about your work that makes it recognizable to you.
The way to start down this path is pretty simple but it will take a bit of work. The most important thing to do is to paint and create a lot of work, it's plain and simple that you need to work on creating every day. While painting a lot you also want to try different mediums, colors, subject matter and while you are doing this try to figure out what you like to do best. Then stick with it and do a lot of paintings in that style, medium and whatever makes your work look like you did it.

Study other artists works and try to figure out what it is about their work that makes it unique to them. This can help you see what it is about your work that makes it unique to you.

Create, Create, Create

Below is a demonstration that I painted in an hour last Sunday at the Dillman's Festival of Artists...don't worry I edited the video so you can see me paint it in 5 minutes. I take out the sound because there is a lot of talk that doesn't pertain to the demonstration. Watching how I paint the piece is what you want to focus on. I start with all the big washes going from light to dark, then to the dark darks and then details.

Artist of the Week
Dan Mondloch saw Dan up in Minnesota at the Dillman's Fest and I always am blown away with his beautiful Plein-air works.
I also came to realize that Dan will be teaching at the same time I will be teaching at Dillman's in the fall. So if you take my workshop this fall you will also be able to meet Dan....win win for all.
