BeckerArt FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter April 4th, Negative Painting

Published: Tue, 04/04/17

Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #100,  Negative Painting

WOW, the 100th newsletter, but this isn't the one I am going to celebrate. Most people that have been in my class for a while know that my favorite number is 11. That is the reason I will be celebrating the 111th newsletter and by that time I will figure out how I will celebrate that newsletter.

I am desperately seeking students for my Landgrove Inn workshop... I heard from the owner of Landgrove Inn that I don't have enough students at the moment to run the class. If you want to get a personal, small group, very one-on-one type of workshop then I would suggest you sign up for this workshop this week. The Landgrove Inn is also an unbelievable place to have a workshop at, so much there to offer and I hear the food is to die for! Let's make this workshop happen.  Sign-up this week  LINK TO THE LANDGROVE INN

Negative Painting
I think I finally have the best way of explaining how to negative paint. I put together a video yesterday trying to show you how I go about teaching students how to figure out negative painting. I'm Sorry, I rushed the making of video so the lighting isn't the best, but I didn't speed up the video, this way you can see in real time how I go about negative painting.

Follow the 3 steps to get the gist of negative painting.

Step 1. the first wash is used to color the objects in a painting. If the color of the objects are white then you will be negative painting those objects too, in the 1st wash.
Step 2. In the 2nd wash cut around objects on top of the 1st wash to create shapes, and while you negative paint those shapes you are also painting the colors outside of those objects to create the color of the 3rd layer of objects.
Step 3. In the 3rd wash cut around objects using the colors from the 2nd wash.
Step 4. The final step is detail, and not necessarily negative painted details. In the details you will also be painting in some positive shapes.

To get a better understanding of the steps, watch the video and it should make it easier for you to understand.

Artist of the Week
Maxfield Parrish's work has always fascinated me, and I wish I had that kind of imagination to paint a world that is seen in ones imagination. I also love his color palette, amazing!

Pinterest Folder of the Week
Last week in the newsletter I talked about styles that artist have that make their art recognizable to them. I found this lady on Pinterest that has put together hundreds of folders showing the works of many different artists.

Check out as you scroll down the page how each folder you see shows all the different styles that make up each individual artist.

Would your art stand out as different from other artists?
