BeckerArt FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter July 11th, Wet-into-Wet Control

Published: Tue, 07/11/17

Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #113, Wet-into-Wet

Last week I was trying something new with one of my classes and it was a blast.... we were using rubber stamps to add to our watercolors. Since it was the first time experimenting with rubber stamps I really didn't come up with anything nice, but boy did I learn a lot. I will keep on with these rubber stamps and stencils and I will show them off when I get a better handle on how to use them in a painting and how to better teach with them. I always try to get my students to try new and different techniques to grow as an artist and better their techniques and painting style.

Recently I have been using the plexi-glass wet-into-wet technique to teach students to learn how to control a wet wash. This technique really has worked wonders in teaching students to control their washes. This weeks newsletter will go into how to practice with this technique.

On the 24th through the 27th I will be in Vermont teaching classes at the Vermont Art Event that Holbein puts together every year. This year I have a couple new acrylic classes to add in the mix. See the brochure by hitting this link. Here is a link to the brochure if you are interested in joining in on the event.

Today and next Monday the 17th I am meeting many of my friends and students at the Kenosha Public Museum to see the Transparent Watercolor Society Show (TWSA) Everybody is invited to join us. We will be meeting at the Museum at 10:30am on both days. We will do a walk through and then another where I will be giving a talk, critiquing and trying to teach all at the same time. Afterwards we will be heading to have lunch at a yet to be determined restaurant and talk art. No need to contact me if you want to join us, just come on either day at 10:30 and walk with us.

Wet-into-Wet, Learn How to take Control
I have been teaching with this technique of working with thin 90lb paper for some time now but just recently brought it back because of how effective it is in teaching students to learn and control their watercolor washes.
I use it as an exercise and I have students do it without a reference so they focus on controlling the watercolor and not focus on making the painting look like a reference.

Check out the video I made below to show you how I use this technique to teach students to use a lot of paint when controlling there watercolors.

Great way to find cheap plexiglass is go to a Goodwill or any second hand store and look for a framed piece of artwork that has a scratched piece of plexiglass in it. You can also use a Formica top of a white erase board.
You can use thin paper, like 90 or 140lb paper to stick to the board when wet. DO NOT TAPE THE PAPER TO THE SLICK SURFACE.... It stays flat all on its own.
