BeckerArt FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter August 22nd, One Color Exercise

Published: Tue, 08/22/17

Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #119, One Color Exercise

I sure hope you didn't take my last week's advice about squinting to squint at the solar eclipse yesterday. We here in northern Illinois didn't get that chance because of the clouds, but luckily the internet had non-stop coverage, but it probably isn't the same as seeing it in person. Well hopefully it won't be cloudy on April 8, 2024, see you then!

This past weekend I went to an American Academy of Art reunion of friends that I don't get to see that often. It brings back so many wonderful memories of art school and it always makes me very thankful that I had that opportunity to go to such a fine art school. It always amazes me how many people I meet that had gone to the Academy and most every one of them always has a great story to tell.

This week's newsletter is an extension to what we learned in last weeks newsletter. Last weeks newsletter HERE

Yes to Class at the Civic Center Libertyville, Thursday Aug. 24th 1:00 to 3:30pm

One Color Exercise
Last week I taught you how to squint at the photo to break it down to a black and white image. With that exercise under your belt, I now would like for you to do it again and then paint it in one color. I recommend to use a black or brown watercolor, but it can be done in any color you would like.

Doing a one color study helps you in seeing the large black and white value pattern. It also makes you concentrate more on the value pattern of the painting, instead of worrying about what colors to use.

A small sketch in one color is a great way of doing a value study before you start a big painting. It will help you to see if the large painting will hold together. It is much better to make the mistakes on a one color sketch done on a small sheet of paper, instead of working large where if you make a mistake it is amplified.

I tell all my students no matter how advanced to every now and then do a one color study, it is great practice for every artist.

Watch the video below to see how I take an image, posterize it and then paint it in one color.

Happy one color painting!
David

There is still time to register for either or both!

Artist of the Week
John F. Carlson. John is not a watercolorist but his work and book are a must see if you have ever painted a landscape. See book below, which is a must have book.

Book of the Week
Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting - Here is a book that I had worn out while I was a student at the AAofA.
