Hello

Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #141, Juried Exhibition Entry

We are 4 week's into the new year....how are you doing with your resolutions to paint more? I hope you are trying to make time to paint and sketch. I am trying my hardest and last week while waiting to be called for jury duty I painted 18 paintings for my BeckerArt Paint Parties. These paintings may not be what I sell or show as my fine art but they make it possible for me to keep going into my fine art career and make people who are artists and many who are not, give them a fun evening of fun, socializing and creating. You can check out those paintings and parties HERE

The deadline for entering TWSA is coming up soon, have you entered yet? This week's newsletter goes into how to enter the TWSA (Transparent Watercolor Society of America).

This Friday I head to Florida for the Dillman's Festival of Artists in Marco Island. I then do a 2-day workshop at the Marco Island Art Center. then a festival of Artists in Dunedin, FL, and a paint party at the Dunedin Arts Center.  Click on the links above for info

Juried Exhibition Entry
Last year I was juried into the TWSA show and after the exhibit was closed I won the People's Choice Award. This made me think about and tell my students that they needed to start entering their own work. I gave many of them encouragement to work outside of class and paint large paintings, not nessesarily for entering but to paint  with a purpose of learning how to paint large and to get confidence to work on their own without a teacher like myself to guide them... then if they feel they accomplished something they feel good about, that is the piece they should enter.

For those that have never entered a national show I will explain in this newsletter how to enter a juried show like TWSA's national exhibition. https://www.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=4777

  • First off, look through your work and pick out what you feel is your best pieces. Don't try and out think what the judges will pick, just enter what you feel is your best work. Read the rules for the show you are entering and make sure you are not breaking any of that shows rules with the piece you will be entering.
  • Next you need to get those best pieces photographed and put into digital form. This is very important to do right. I would even go as far as getting a professional to either scan the image or professionally photographed. These images will represent your paintings and you want them to look as good as the original paintings. Do not send a bad photo! Bad photos are ones that are not exactly showing what the painting looks like and ones that have the mat and frame showing. Have the painting cropped to the edges of the image and don't have a deckled edge showing. Make sure the edges are squared up.
Simply put, only send images that look exactly like the painting with nothing but the exact painting shown in the photo. Check the information in the entry form to what size the image needs to be and the format they want it sent in.
  • For the TWSA you need to go to http://watercolors.org/ to find the link to the callforentry form to enter the TWSA show. When in  https://www.callforentry.org you will be asked to sign-up to this website.
  • When you are ready to download your images you will press on the My Portfolio button
There you will get this info I have copy and pasted below. Make sure you follow the image size and jpg  format
Don't worry about the Audio and Video setting that's not for this show.

You may upload the following file types to your portfolio:

Limits on file sizes and file types for all media uploads:

IMAGE: JPEG or JPG, under 5MB with a minimum of 1200 pixels on the longest side.
AUDIO: AIFF, WAV, XMF, MP3, under 10MB with a minimum bit rate of 96.
    VIDEO: 3GP, WMV, AVI, MOV, ASF, MPG, MP4, M2T, MKV, M2TS, under 100MB with a minimum resolution of 640 x 480; minimum 12 fps.

More information about acceptable file types is available at Media Prep.

  • Next find the Apply to Call button where you will look for the TWSA Call which is listed as 2018 Transparent Watercolor Society of America 42nd National Exhibition... then you hit the Apply to Call link and then you need to sign an agreement.

  • Follow the directions and fill in the form. They will ask how many entries.
What are the frame and without frame sizes. The insurance value and what kind of member you are.

  • Then there are buttons to attach your images you want to submit.

  • Hit the save application button and finally you go to the check-out button to pay and enter.

It's pretty simple if you just follow the directions that they have posted. That's it, so enter today and good luck!
