Painting a Snowy Farm Scene
A couple of weeks ago I painted this scene in my watercolor classes to show students how to paint through large areas when painting snow where the scene is either overcast or in a scene where many of the values are closely related. For instance when the sky and the ground all have about the same value and color. This happens a lot in scenes where there is an overcast sky or when the sun in on the horizon for a sunset or sunrize scene.

Watch the video to see how I use the first wash to color the sky and the snow with the same colors and values.
The I use the second wash to identify the shapes of the snow and all the dark objects.

With the watercolor medium it is always easier to paint large areas of light first before going into dark details.

Artist and Book of the Week
Nita Engle Every time I have taught I am always reminded of Nita Engle. She had taught for many years at Dillman's and I have always heard that her workshops were the best. Looking at her paintings I can see how much she loved painting the midwest at anytime of the year.

Amazing Watercolors!
