Hello
Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #149, Most Important
Just got back home yesterday from Hopkins, Minnesota where I did a demonstration for the Dillman's Festival of Artist's. I'm guessing, but I think this has been my 5th or 6th year driving up 6 hours to do an hour demo for the wonderful Minnesotan clan. Next long drive will be in 2 weeks to The Kanuga Workshop in North Carolina! I'm looking for recommendations if anybody has listened to some good books while driving long distances.
Last
week I set up a table at my old high school, Grant in Fox Lake, IL. It was a career fair for all the students and I set up a table for those that were interested in asking me about an art career. I talked mostly about my advertising, illustration career but I think it too applies to a fine art career. I talk about it in this week's newsletter.
This year I donated to the Art for the Paws fundraiser. To see or donate to the cause go HERE
I had some people ask me about the hours that I am open for at my new Studio/Gallery. My studio/gallery will be open by appointment and when I am working there I will at certain times place an open sign in the window. Best bet, however, is make an
appointment. Yes to Class at the Civic Center Libertyville, Thursday, Mar. 29th 1pm to 3:30 Yes to Class at The Antioch Fine Arts Foundation, Thursday, Mar. 29th 6:30 to 9pm Yes to Class at BeckerArt Gallery in McHenry, Saturday, Mar. 31st 9am to 11:30

Newsletters. Art for the Paws donation shown below...... bid on it HERE It was very interesting watching high school kids last week walk around in groups looking over 50 career tables. I thought I would get a lot more kids than I did come over to ask questions about an art career but many of the kids seemed hesitant to come by themselves and most hung out in groups and would only come to the table with
friends.
I thought a great deal about what I would tell these students about an art career, what I came up with was this... I told them that the most important thing about becoming a good artist and working in the artist illustration field was that they should work hard on learning to draw and create from their imagination along with going to an art school geared towards the art you are looking to go into. I told them that a 4-year college is good for getting a degree in the
arts when the job you are getting requires it. For many art jobs, however, that sheet of paper won't do you any good if you can't produce a great portfolio or body of work, especially if you are looking to become an illustrator or storyboard artist.
Drawing and sketching are good for any art profession you go into. At the Rhode Island School of Design, one of the better art schools still around, they have every student no matter what you will be going into, take a
fundamentals class that includes learning to draw. Photographers, Fashion Designers, Graphic Artists every student in the school no matter what they will be going into needs to first learn to draw and create.
So what is the most important thing about becoming an artist....learn to draw! David Set-up to talk to High School Students

Janet Nunn will be at Dillman's this year the same week I will be teaching. If you take my workshop you will probably get to meet Janet and Bob Burridge too, since both will also be teaching the same week.
Janet's work is outstanding, can't wait to see her and her students at
