Hello
Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #272, Photo Distortion
I'm back home for a couple of days before I head off again to my next in-person workshop in Goshen, IN.
In the last 20 days I have driven over 3000 miles around all of the Great Lakes and coming up in September I will heading off again to Dillman's and then to a plein-air festival in Grand Marais. I know this may sound scary with the virus upon us but I had taken a great deal of caution and have asked all the students to do the same and so far everyone has been on the same page.
I haven't put up my daily paintings on my website because I am traveling and teaching so much away from my studio. I can't do the shipping so I will start doing the daily paintings again when I am on a regular schedule.
If you had bought a painting or brushes and didn't get them yet please let me know. I did ship out a bunch of orders yesterday and hopefully, those get to you asap. The USPS has been very slow on some of my packages that are suppose to get there in 2 to 3 days, they end up getting to the customer in 2 or 3 weeks.
Coming up is my Dillman's popular Watermedia Workshop where you don't bring any materials, I supply everything, I think I still have some openings... go here to register
Yes Class at the Civic Center in Libertyville with Sue MacFarlan will be August 13th from 1pm to 3:30pm
NO CLASS and my Studio is CLOSED at the BeckerArt Studio in McHenry August 15th
As I was traveling around the 5 Great Lakes in these last couple of weeks I had taken a lot of images and recently I started taking the full camera view which ends up making the photos kind of panoramic. The problem with taking images with this view is a lot of the photos get distorted on the edges because the camera lens gives you a fish-eye effect because the lens is rounded glass and screws up the perspective on the edges.
See below for an example of what I mean.
In this photo of the lighthouse which is somewhat panoramic the lens of the camera distorts the house and the lighthouse and points them to the center. This happens because the lens of the camera is curved and distorts the sides.
See below for 2 more examples.
You can see in both these images that the trees or building are pointing towards the center.
Seeing this happening to my photos I realized it doesn't look right and I have many times seen students draw it like that and the painting ends up not looking right.
What I suggest to my students is that they straighten things out when they sketch up the drawing or if they can't imagine how it will look straight with horizontal and vertical lines then I suggest a perspective app or program to fix the photo.
Most photo editing programs on your phone have a perspective button that can help you straighten out the tops, bottoms, and sides of your image. See if your phone has a perspective app that can straighten out a curved building, if it doesn't then look for a Perspective Warp Photo Effect app, there are a bunch for both Apple and Android phones. I use Photoshop to correct my images but a simple app works just as well.
Here are all 3 that have been straightened out and made horizontally and vertically.
