Hello
Welcome to the FLOAT-YOUR-PIGMENT Newsletter #336 Fill The Stage
I hope everyone is having a great autumn and seeing a bunch of great autumn scenes. Winter will be here in no time so start getting ready for the holiday paintings. Make sure to get started with those cards and gift paintings.
This week's newsletter talks about how to fill a scene with a center of interest when there isn't a good center of interest to begin with.
This Thursday, Friday and Saturday I will be doing my 1st online workshop with the Red River Watercolor Society... thank you to all of you that signed up!
NO Class at the Civic Center in Libertyville October 28th 1pm to 3:30pm
NO Class at The Studio in McHenry, Oct 30th 9am to 11:30am
When I am teaching a class where students bring in their own photographs I find that many bring in photos that are nice but many of these photos are great stages but lack any actors. So what I mean by this is that many landscapes and cityscapes that I see are great shots but they lack a good center of interest.
The image that I chose for this week's paint-a-long is one of those photos. This photo, if painted like it is, would be an okay painting but I think with a little bit more of a center of interest it would look and be a better composition.
This type of thing happens a lot with landscapes that are filled with a bunch of the same things, like all the same trees or shrubs or filled areas of the same flowers. For the center of interest to work when there is a lot of the same things in a photo, it would need to stand out more than the other areas in that photo. It can be a different lighting or just a different color. It can also be a different edge, for instance, if everything is soft-edged then when you make the center of
interest a hard edge it would definitely stand out as the center of interest.
Check out some of the things I added to the photo below to make the center of interest stand out more. It can be things that are added to the image or it can be like I talked about above a change of color, contrast, and edges.
Don't be afraid to change the photo and add and subtract things to make the photo a better composition.
Be Creative

Aneita Gates
A couple of weeks ago I met Aneita in Springfield IL. and she was taking my class. I hope she learned something from my class because her work already is amazing!
She doesn't have a website I could find so I just got images off of a Google Image search.
